After a 1-year hiatus, we hosted the Sunset Community Festival once again, this time in a new location across from A.P. Giannini Middle School, on 37th Avenue at Ortega. This annual zero-waste intergenerational bridge-building event brings together residents and local nonprofits, small-businesses, artisans and local performers (including young people from our youth community) to celebrate our distinctive Sunset community.
Staff member Melissa Laureta helped to organize the event and coordinated 50 volunteers for our Kids Zone. When asked for highlights she shared, “Hearing the children's laughter. Parents told us how happy their kids were and how long it's been since they had this much fun! Plus, the weather was San Francisco HOT––in the 70s!”
This year, the festival featured:
• 29 merchants, makers, and local causes
• 12 food vendors
• An SYS-hosted beer and wine garden, staffed by our awesome board members
• A fabulous Kids Zone with games and prizes, ginormous inflatable slide, bubble magic, and Boswick the Clown
• A reptile petting zoo with bearded dragon, skink, corn snakes, and tortoises
Look for us next September and reach out if you’d like to volunteer! It takes a village!
